THE SITUATION: You are dealt a two-card total of 10, while the dealer is sitting with the upcard of nine. What's your move? THE CORRECT PLAY: DOUBLE-DOWN ON THIS TWO-CARD 10. THE EXPLANATION: Did you realize that if you double-down you will win 49% of your hands against 42% losers, while simply hitting the hand will bring you a 50-to-35.5 win/loss ratio? It actually makes a lot of sense, when you consider that doubling allows you only one card, while hitting lets you take as many as you need to make your hand. But doubling on the ten is appropriate, because the impact of the result of your hands is doubled, and consequently even a smaller winning percentage can result in a greater positive expectation. In this case, doublng gets a small edge over hitting. So play the percentages!! |
