PRESS RELEASE
DE LA HOYA - VARGAS NEED ONLY TURN WRIGHT,
ON ROAD TO TITLE UNIFICATION!
WINKY BANDWAGON STEAMS INTO LAS VEGAS TODAY!
LAS VEGAS, NV (September 8, 2002) IBF jr. middleweight champion, WINKY WRIGHT,
successfully defended his title last night, defeating No. 1 contender and mandatory
challenger Bronco McKart, via an eighth-round disqualification. Wright, well ahead on all
three judges' scorecards in his own right, was the victim of numerous low blows by McKart,
who was penalized five points for the infractions, before turning his back on referee Mike
Fisher, prompting the stoppage. The fight was televised nationally by HBO.
"If I had taken one more low blow, I would have tried out for The
Sopranos,'" said Wright after the fight.
McKart, whose record fell to 45-4 (29 KOs), won only one of the eight rounds scored on
Judge Jim Howard's card and just two rounds on the cards of Judges Bob Flemme and Greg
Baker, exclusive of the penalties.
Now that he has satisfied his mandatory title defense, Wright, 44-3 (25 KOs), has set his
sights on unifying the junior middleweight title, fighting the winner of this Saturday's
WBC-WBA super welterweight championship fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Fernado Vargas.
"I want to unify the title and be the undisputed champion in the 154-pound
division," said Wright. "We are three of the best fighters in the world but we
have never been an undisputed champion. It is a fight that would provide a defining moment
for our professional careers. If history is denied, the champion' who does not step
up, can kiss greatness goodbye!"
Wright will be making a live in-studio appearance on this week's ESPN2's "Friday
Night Fights" at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Other major media
appearances for Winky during his stay in Las Vegas, include: "Las Vegas
Punchline," hosted by Kevin Iole and Dave Cokin and "Rich Marotta's Neutral
Corner."
