PRESS RELEASE
JOSE TORRES AND PAUL JOHNSON OF THE BOXERS ORGANIZING COMMITTEE ON "KNOCKOUT
RADIO" ON MAXBOXING.COM
by Eddie Goldman
You may have had your fill of hearing news about the recently averted baseball strike. You
would not be alone in that sentiment. But benefits like the contract rights and high
salaries baseball players have won over the years are unknown to over 99 percent of all
professional boxers.
There is still no pension fund for boxers. They have no health insurance. They have no
collective body standing up for them in their business dealings with promoters, managers,
and television networks. And you might be shocked to learn just how little the vast
majority of them earn when they fight and put their bodies on the line.
This week on Knockout Radio, exclusively on Maxboxing.com (http://maxboxing.com), we speak
with two of the key players working to change this situation.
You may remember Jose Torres as the light heavyweight champion of the world in 1965-66. In
those days there was just one world champion at each weight, and he was it. He later
became New York State Athletic Commission chairman, an author, a columnist for ESPN
Deportes, and a member of the Boxing Hall of Fame.
Jose Torres is also presently a member of the Boxers Organizing Committee (B.O.C.), whose
goal is to establish a boxers' union. The chairman of the B.O.C. is Paul Johnson, himself
a former professional boxer in the 1970s. Together they are working to lay the basis for
the beginning of an organizing drive to create such a union.
This week on "Knockout Radio" we speak to Jose Torres and Paul Johnson to get
the latest information on the progress towards forming a boxers' union. Discussed are how
soon we can expect an organizing drive to begin, which boxers support the formation of a
union, and how a union's establishment will affect the sport of boxing itself.
This interview is part of our continuing coverage of the fight for a boxers' union,
including our five-part series on that subject and this week's article about progress in
the Kassim Ouma situation, also on Maxboxing.com.
If you want to assist this process, or just get more information, the Boxers Organizing
Committee has a web site at: http://www.boxers.org.
"Knockout Radio" is hosted by myself, Eddie Goldman, and is prerecorded. You can
e-mail us at: knockoutradio@yahoo.com. Join in the discussion about boxing's hottest
issues!
You can always find "Knockout Radio" on Maxboxing.com by looking at the
right-hand column and going to the INTERACTIVE section. "Knockout Radio" can be
heard exclusively on the members-only section of Maxboxing.com. This section is a
subscription service, meaning that your subscriptions can keep the content there
commercial-free.
