----FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-----
SANTOS CANT WAIT FOR TITLE FIGHT WITH FORBES
Father-to-be already has reason to celebrate
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 12, 2002) - With his world title fight less than 6 days away, Diamond
David Santos said his training camp has gone as smooth as he could have hoped for.
"Everything has been going great", said Santos (42-4, 27 KOs) , who is training
in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Fla. for his Aug. 18 title fight with IBF
junior-lightweight champ Steve Forbes (20-1, 5 KOs). "I'm getting quality sparring
with four different guys and I'm ready to do it. I'm hoping these remaining days go by
fast. I can't wait for the fight."
Santos, who is a 3-to-1 underdog, said he's been sparring eight to 12 rounds and is
prepared to go the distance if that's what it takes. He likes his chances.
"I'm very focused right now and I've got less than a week to work on
everything," he said. "This is the biggest opportunity of my life. I'm a hungry
fighter."
Despite losing to Forbes earlier in his career, Santos said this fight will be different
than the first one when he was sick two weeks before the fight.
"That's not an excuse," he said. "I chose to get in the ring. But I've
never been so focused as I am now."
He also has a little more incentive. He recently learned that he and his wife are going to
have a baby.
"David is in tremendous shape and has gotten great sparring," said his manager
Jim McLoughlin. "He's ready to fight right now."
The card, to be televised as part of the Fox Sports Net Sunday Night Fights series, will
include an IBF cruiserweight title-elimination fight between James "Lights Out
Toney" (64-4-2, 41 KOs) and Jason Robinson (16-2, 10 KOs), the winner being the
mandatory challenger to champion Vassiliy Jirov.
Promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, the card will include ring announcer Amy Hayes, who
appeared in the March issue of Playboy magazine.
