PRESS RELEASE
TOP SUPER-BANTAMWEIGHT PROSPECTS TO CLASH
ON AUG. 10 EDITION OF "SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION"
OLIVA AND ADORNO SET TO DO BATTLE AT THE SOBOBA CASINO
LOS ANGELES (July 30, 2002) - Just days after celebrating it's first anniversary,
Showtime's exciting boxing series "ShoBox: The New Generation" will celebrate at
the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, CA on August 10 with a 12-round war between highly
regarded super bantamweight prospects Fabio Oliva of Argentina (18-0, 10 KOs) and Omar
Adorno of Puerto Rico (14-2-1, 10 KOs).
Now that's a birthday bash.
"It's exciting to be a part of Showtime's exciting new series, as well as being on
hand for the grand opening of a beautiful new 14,000 seat outdoor arena," said Dan
Goossen, whose company, Goossen Tutor Promotions, will be promoting the event. "We've
put together an exciting card featuring some of boxing's future stars, and it's events
like these that make boxing the great sport it is. The fight may be in August, but these
kids still have some fireworks left over."
Along with the Oliva-Adorno fight, Showtime will also televise the semi-main event between
undefeated lightweight prospects Adan Hernandez (11-0, 4 KOs) of El Paso, Texas and Hugo
Lewis (12-0-1, 10 KOs) of Georgetown, Guyana.
Also scheduled to appear on the card is fan favorite, former Playboy model and boxing
sensation, Mia "The Knockout" St. John (25-1, 12 KOs).
Oliva, a slick boxer with a lot of power, is looking forward to making his first
appearance outside of Argentina. Said his manager Santiago Tapia, "Fabio is very
popular in Argentina and this is a great opportunity for him. He knows this is a tough
fight for him, but the risk was overshadowed by the ability to showcase his skills in
front of America.''
Adorno, a member of the 1996 Puerto Rico Olympic team, has also shown good power, and is
well aware of the fans' expectations of him. "I want to follow in the footsteps of my
countryman, Felix Trinidad," said Adorno. "I'm an exciting fighter and the fans
will love to cheer me on."
Fans at the event and at home will be treated to one of the "hottest" ring
announcers emerging in the business, former Playboy model Amy Hayes. Ms. Hayes was a
recent presenter at the Victor Awards, the longest running sports award show (34 years) in
the history of television.
Showtime cable network's "ShoBox" series televises fights of elite up-and-coming
prospects. The live event will begin at 1:15 pm (PT) with the first televised bout
scheduled for 2 pm (PT). Doors open at noon. The broadcast will be delayed on the West
Coast, with a national television start time at 5 p.m. in all markets.
The weigh-in for the card will take place on August 9th at 1pm at the Sports Bar at Soboba
Casino.
