OPEN LETTER FROM PATRICIA PAGE: WIFE OF STRICKEN FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP GREG PAGE
How many boxers need to nearly die in the ring before these guys wake up? When my husband
Greg Page suffered a severe brain injury and massive stroke from an injury he sustained in
a "state sanctioned" professional boxing match, we had no idea that this would
happen to him. According to the Professional Boxer's Safety Act, insurance should have
been provided for Greg.
However, instead Greg is a "card carrying member" of the Brain Injury
Association, the one club that no one asks to join. Greg joined this club without health
insurance to pay for an in-home nurse, physical therapy, motorized wheelchair, medication,
or check-ups that a handicapped person needs. Taking care of my husband is a full-time job
that takes up all of my time and attention, which I do without thinking twice because I
truly love him. It is completely unfair and wrong though, for me to have to take care of
my husband without the same medical and disability benefits that people who get hurt in
every other job get.
It is extremely important to me that I keep Greg's injury front and center because I want
people to know the time is now for doing something for these guys to protect our loved
ones them and bring attention to what could happen to them, nearly dying doing their jobs!
I promised Greg shortly after he emerged from the coma, that I would do what I could to
change things and help the other guys out there.
According to statistics, somewhere between 87 % and 89% of ALL boxers will suffer a
"brain injury" at some point in their career. I want ALL boxers and their
families to know that there are people out there who can prevent the hardships that I am
going through right now, from ever having to happen to another professional ! boxer. Right
now Angel Rodriguez is doing boxing seminars that can get health and life insurance and
money management for boxers, that Greg and I didnt know about and almost every boxer
out there still dont know about. Information about how boxers can get insurance and
manage their money better and how boxing can help them do it, could have made my
husbands and my life much simpler. This is why I want to share how to prevent this
with the rest of the world and hope that the state boxing commissions, hotels, and casinos
use this person to spread the word to the boxers fighting in their state or building.
Contact Angel at (407) 484-5150 or bigange1@msn.com about making the hardest sport easier
to survive.
In the meanwhile, I will try to get myself and my great friend Lisa McClellan, whose
brother Gerald is also a former world ! champion handicapped from a fight, the help that
we both need to get our family what they need to survive. On Saturday, February 22 at the
Clock Tower Resort in Rockford, Illinois we are going to hold a fundraiser so what we can
get the medical care that Greg and Gerald badly need. The tickets for this fundraiser are
$100 and can be bought by calling at 815-233-5460. For more information, contact Lisa
McClellan at lisamcclellan99@aol.com.
I hope that people take advantage of the life and health insurance and financial benefits
that are out there for boxers so that fundraisers for men who gave the sport their all
dont have to be necessary anymore. God Bless.
Patricia Love-Page

PRESS RELEASE
FLORIDA HAS A NEW FIGHT SCENE
The all action fights that All Star Boxing has brought to deliriously packed
Kissimmee Civic Center audiences over the last two years, will continue in 2003
when Telemundo airs from Kissimmee, Florida this Friday February 21st. The
scheduled twelve round main event features Genaro Garcia attempting to recapture
his former FECARBOX bantamweight title against former WBO champion Mauricio
Martinez on the nationally televised card.
This pairing is the continuation of the Zabala family's wildly successful
formula that entails the pairing of two proven Latin action warriors who have a
history of producing fights that leave the attending crowd hoarse. This formula
is being widely duplicated by the newly sprouted cottage industry of Hispanic
saturated and oriented boxing series' currently being televised by Telefutura,
HBO Latino, and Top Rank's bilingual Pay-Per-View cards.
Garcia is a gritty boxer-puncher from Mexico who brings a 27-4 (16 KO's) record
to Central Florida, including a second round kayo of the recently crowned world
and IBF bantamweight champion Rafael Marquez. Marquez just dramatically starched
long time champion Tim Austin this past Saturday on HBO to force his way into
the sport's top tier.
Martinez for his part is a 19-4-1 (14 KO's) pug whose losses have come against
naturally bigger world champions such as Freddie Norwood and Hector Acero
Sanchez who fought the Panamanian when he was still a raw pro with less than 15
fights on his resume. Martinez is poised to convert the hard learned lessons of
those fights into a maximized opportunity to catapult himself into title
contention with an impressive showing on national TV this Friday.
Also featured on the card is Puerto Rico's Jose "Zeus" Vasquez in a six round
super middleweight bout against Joe Harris; Orlando, Florida heavyweights Willy
Hering and Derrick Edwars will face off in a four round scuffle; Carlos "Tutin"
Perez and Cornell Harris will spark a four round bantamweight bout; Miami's
Ricky Piedra will square off against Tyrone Wiggins for a scheduled four round
of junior welterweight action; Jose Leonardo Cruz of Colombia will meet Miami's
Keith Mayor in another super lightweight four rounder. Colombian kayo artist
Carlos Maussa will try to extend his winning streak of eleven wins, all by
knockout, to twelve in a row on the card as well.
A press conference with an attending weigh-in will be held at Los Compadres
Tavern on Thursday February 20th between 5pm to 7 pm. It will be at this tavern
that All Star Boxing will announce its future plans to bring four nationally
televised boxing cards to the Kissimmee Civic Center in 2003, with another four
to be held at the Miccosukee Casino in Miami, FL. Los Compadres is located on
1315 North John Young Parkway in Kissimmee, which intersects with 192, and can
be reached by phone at (407) 518-6080.
The doors to the Kissimmee Civic Center located on 201 E. Dakin Avenue,
Kissimmee, FL will open at 8 PM this Friday with Telemundo beginning its
televised coverage at 11:30 PM. General admission tickets will be priced at $15
while ringside seats will be sold at $30. Call (407) 935-1412 for tickets.
