JORDAN TO RETIRE? YOU CAN BET ON IT!
By CHARLES JAY, Editor/Publisher, TotalAction.com
Posted December 29, 2001
On Thursday night, Michael Jordan was held to just six points by the Indiana Pacers - that
was a career low and broke an 866-game streak in which he had scored in double digits.
Could it be the first of many nights like this for Jordan and the Washington Wizards? And
will this discourage Michael enough to pack it in again by the end of the year? Intertops is taking bets on the proposition. They have
posted a -130 price that Jordan WILL retire before the beginning of the next NBA regular
season, with a +110 price that he WON'T retire. Previously, Intertops had props on whether
Jordan would be the NBA's Most Valuable Player this season (-600 that he wouldn't, +400
that he would), and posted -667/+650 odds that he would not win the NBA scoring title. The
Jordan bet at Intertops is good until December 31, although perhaps they'll extend it or
re-post it.
By the way, if you had bet that Jordan would score anywhere between six and ten points in
Thursday night's game, you could have cashed in at 25/1 odds at the World Sports Exchange. WSE posts props on Jordan
performances for most every game, and had listed another prop (since closed) in which
Michael was 5/2 to score anywhere from 51-55 points in his highest scoring game of the
season.
Bowl Odds and Props
Both Betzone and Direcbet.com
are still offering the Texas Tech-Iowa game (Alamo Bowl) today at pick'em............World
Sports Exchange has posted a money line on the Insight.com Bowl, with Kansas State a
-230/+190 favorite to beat Syracuse outright. In the national title game (Rose Bowl) next
Wednesday, Miami is a -330/+250 favorite over Nebraska.......Olympic Sports is having some fun with all the teams
playing in bowls on Saturday. In its "Imaginary Matchups" section, Olympic has
listed Toledo (Motor City Bowl) vs. Iowa (Alamo Bowl) as a pick'em, while Texas Tech
(Alamo Bowl) is a 1.5-point favorite over Washington State, which plays Monday against
Purdue in the Sun Bowl. Kansas State (Insight.com Bowl) and Tennessee (Citrus Bowl) are
pick'em, while Purdue (Washington State's Sun Bowl foe) is a half-point favorite over
Syracuse, which battles Kansas State in the Insight.com Bowl.
If Cincinnati can pull of a double-digit win over Toledo in Saturday's Motor City Bowl,
bettors will get paid a minimum of 5/1 on their money, in the propositions listed at Intertops. A Bearcat win by 7-12 points will net 5/1,
and a win of 13-18 points brings 11/1. A two-touchdown Toledo blowout will yield 13/2
(+650).........If Kansas State blows away Syracuse like they destroyed bowl teams Iowa
State (42-3) and Louisiana Tech (40-7) down the stretch, you can get yourself a handsome
payoff from Intertops, which posts the Wildcats to win the game by 19-24 points, and 25/1
to win by 31-36 points............Looking ahead, Nebraska is 9/2 to beat Miami by 1-6
points in the Rose Bowl on January 3.
College Hoops Notes
Rick Pitino returns to Lexington this afternoon, bringing his Louisville Cardinals to Rupp
Arena to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky is -14 in most books, but Canbet and WWTS are
offering Kentucky at -13.
Obviously, the numbers are subject to change. And remember, you can't get hurt by shopping
around!
