MASTERS MADNESS

Tiger Woods is a solid favorite to win the 2001 Masters. That's no surprise. But what is surprising is some of the disparity in prices that you can get Woods at.

Over at Bowman's (http://www.bowmans.com) Woods is 11/10 to wear the green jacket, and everyone else is pretty long - last year's champion, Vijay Singh, is at 9/1, followed by Phil Mickelson (10/1), Davis Love III (14/1), and Ernie Els (16/1). There are plenty of player props available - one of has Love a favorite over Els to have the better 72-hole score (-123/+103).

And a proposition Bowman's has that is somewhat different involves who will win the Masters WITHOUT Woods in the prop, or, if Woods wins, who will be second. In that field, Singh is 6/1, with Mickelson at 7/1, Love 10/1, and Els 12/1...........

Sportsbook.com (http://www.sportsbook.com) is offering a much better price on Tiger. You can get 2/1 on him as of this morning. And odds on some of the other players are appetizing - Singh at 12/1, Love at 14/1, Mickelson at 15/1, and Els at 18/1. If you're feeling a little sentimental, you can play Tom Watson to win it and get 200/1, while Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd, Ben Crenshaw, Seve Ballesteros, and Gary Player are all 1000/1........

Sportsbook.com is also offering a an over/under on Woods' first-round score - under 71.5 is -180, while the take-back on the over is +140. For 72 holes, his over/under is 279.5 - the under is -135, while the over is +105.........Will an amateur make the cut at the Masters? Probably not, says Sportsbook.com, which has the "No" at -300. But if think one will, you can get +220...............Will an American-born golfer win? The "Yes" is -180, while "No" is +140................Lots of player props, of course, from an online operation that usually has as many or more than anyone. Tiger, for example, is -180/+140 over Mickelson, while Woods' college teammate, Notah Begay III, is favored by the same price over Jack Nicklaus...............

At Bluesq.com (http://www.bluesq.com), Woods is favored at 7/4, followed by Singh at 12/1, Mickelson at 14/1, Love at 20/1, and Ernie Els and David Duval, both at 25/1............... Olympic Sports (http://www.thegreek.com) lists Woods at 3/2, with Mickelson, Love, and Singh at 12/1, Els at 16/1, Duval at 24/1, Tom Lehman at 28/1, Colin Montgomerie at 32/1, and Sergio Garcia at 40/1...........One of propositions available at Diamond Sports International (http://www.2betanything.com) allows you to bet any player in the field against Woods. You can take Woods, for example, and get +180, or lay -240 and have all players other than Woods to win the tournament............World Sports Exchange (http://www.wsex.com) has Woods a pretty healthy favorite in the head-to-head matchup with Mickelson (-280/+240)............

William Hill (http://www.williamhill.co.uk) has a multitude of interesting propositions. For example, you can bet on who will have the best score out of all the first-time Masters players. Steve Flesch is the favorite in that category, at 9/2, while Bob May, whom you may remember dueled Tiger Woods to the very end of last year's PGA Championship, is listed at 11/1. You can bet on who the highest-finishing European player will be. Colin Montgomerie tops that list, at 9/2, with Bernhard Langer at 5/1, Sergio Garcia at 13/2, and Jose Maria Olazabal and Jesper Parnevik both posted at 7/1. And William Hill has Phil Mickelson the favorite in their category "Top American without Tiger Woods", at 5/1, followed by Love, at 11/2, Duval at 11/1, Jim Furyk at 12/1, Tom Lehman at 14/1, and Hal Sutton at 18/1...........

World Sports Exchange, in addition to posting a number of head-to-head props, is offering 30 matchups for the first round only. Obviously some of the competitors are not going to be around for all four days. One of the more intriguing - Gary Player is a substantial first-round favorite over Arnold Palmer (-500/+400). Woods is a 2/1 favorite over Canadian Mike Weir (-220/+180), and Stewart Cink is a slight favorite over Greg Norman (-130/Even). Nick Faldo is a favorite over Jack Nicklaus (-300/+250) for the entire tournament...........

Some of the more imaginative stuff is being posted by SportingOdds.com (http://www.sportingodds.com), where you can get 33/1 on the first-round leader of the Masters missing the cut. Or 7/2 that the tournament will be decided in a playoff. At SportingOdds, it's a 10/1 shot that the Masters champion will have led the tournament after every round, and 6/1 that the player who is leading at the last hole will not win. The "Steward's Enquiry" proposition offers 5/1 odds that a player will be disqualified during the Masters. Oh by the way, Woods is 7/4 to win the tourney, with Singh at 10/1 and Mickelson at 12/1........

Okay, since everybody likes Woods to win the Masters, how many majors WILL Tiger win this year? Well, at SportingOdds, Woods is 11/4 to get shut entirely out of the winner's circle in the majors, while he's 7/4 to win one major, 2/1 to win two, 5/1 to win three, and 14/1 to win the Grand Slam. Sportsbook.com has Woods 1/5 to win a major title this year, with Love at 3/1, Mickelson at 7/2, Els at 7/2, Duval at 4/1, Singh at 5/1, Garcia at 8/1, and Greg Norman at 15/1. Bluesq.com has Woods at 25/1 to win the Grand Slam, 7/4 to win one major, 9/4 to win two, 6/1 to win three, and 9/4 to get shut out. They're also offering 16/1 on Tiger shooting 59 or lower for a round in one of this year's four major championships. He's also their 7/4 favorite for the next major, the British Open.

But let's get this one started first.

Of course, the numbers are subject to change. For best results, as always, shop around. And remember, we're just reporting; we don't necessarily endorse any of the sportsbooks mentioned here, unless specified.

Good luck.
