PRO FOOTBALL -- December 24, 2000

CINCINNATI (+10.5) at PHILADELPHIA -- Eagles got some well-deserved rest in the bye week. Among other things, they're looking to integrate Chris Warren into the mix this week, so he can provide ground support for Donovan McNabb, who has had to do an awful lot by himself. They know they're in the playoffs, and can't win a division title. Now they're trying to get some momentum going into the post-season, and there's another incentive at work as well - McNabb can pick up a whopping $1 MILLION bonus if he can finish in the top eight in any of three passing categories, one of which is touchdown passes. That one is within reach, if he can throw three or four against the Bengals. And isn't it ironic that we're talking about him throwing three of four TD's, when the Cincinnati passing game has produced just FIVE touchdowns all year. They have a pair of talented but inexperienced receivers that the Eagle corners can shut down. Cincinnati has scored just 34 points on the road all season. And Eagles have six wins by 11 points or more. Hugh Douglas, Corey Simon, meet Scott Mitchell. Scott Mitchell, run for your life. FINAL SCORE: PHILADELPHIA 30, CINCINNATI 13

KANSAS CITY (-4) at ATLANTA -- A "who cares" game, but maybe the Chiefs, hot off a win over Denver, care more. The Atlanta offense appears to have already started its off-season - over the last four weeks the Falcons have scored 37 points, and have tallied 74 points in the last seven games. And Dan Reeves' team has scored 15 or less points in a game ELEVEN times. And it must be noted - much of that was compiled even with veteran Chris Chandler at the controls. Was it an illusion, or did Kansas City actually have 264 rushing yards last week? if they can sustain that (Atlanta 27th versus rush), they'll walk away with this one. Gunther Cunningham would love to be able to creep back to the .500 mark. And Falcons experiencing very little home-field advantage these days (sporadic crowds; 1-4-1 ATS last six in Georgia Dome). FINAL SCORE: KANSAS CITY 23, ATLANTA 16

MINNESOTA (+6, O/U = 52) at INDIANAPOLIS -- Vikings would like to get a first-round playoff bye, while Colts in need of a win to get to the post-season at all. At this writing, it looks as if Bubby Brister will get the call at QB for Minnesota; surely he doesn't pose the kind of running threat Daunte Culpepper does, and he's also no spring chicken. But he's no "babe in the woods" either, in terms of stepping into a situation on short notice. Brister fully capable of connecting with Minnesota weapons, enough to make this a genuine barnburner. And unless Culpepper put on inactive list prior to game, would expect the Central Florida product to see some playing time. Either way, both teams have the capability of scoring points on the indoor "fast track". And neither side has what you would call, ahem, a dependable defense. Minnesota has tallied 28 ppg over its last six. And sure, Colts slowed down Miami and Buffalo last two weeks, but Viking offense a different matter entirely. Would look to the "over" on this one. FINAL SCORE: INDIANAPOLIS 33, MINNESOTA 27

ARIZONA (+7) at WASHINGTON -- Okay - Dave McGinnis has now been retained for next year as Cards' head coach. So there will be more than a few Arizona players who know who they have to impress to get back to training camp next summer. Meanwhile, who knows if Danny Snyder will be sitting in a suite of offices, all by himself, in the nation's capital next year? Hey, Washington may wind up blowing out the Cardinals - God knows they have more talent. But we wouldn't be caught dead laying this many points with the Redskins. The general theory is this - here's a team that went completely into the tank when there was actually something to gained in beating Dallas and Pittsburgh. What would make these fat cats perform now? Changes in the offing in Washington, where apparently the presence of Jeff George and the quarterback controversy that ensued was a divisive force. Last meeting between these two, Washington had 27 first downs to Arizona's 11, and out-gained them by 253 yards, yet still found a way to lose. Good luck, Danny. On second thought, Cards have scored 94 points in their last nine games, and have dropped their last six road games to the number. And just don't close out seasons very well (2-12-1 ATS over the last quadrant of the schedule since 1997). Guess what? It's a lot easier to pick a loser than a winner here. Neither deserves the "W". FINAL SCORE: WASHINGTON 0, ARIZONA 0
